Accessibility
Everyone should be able to find, book and enjoy a getaway. We build OzGetaways to work with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and a phone, and we want to hear about anything that gets in your way.
What we aim for
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the site and, later, the app. We check new pages with a keyboard, with a screen reader, at 200% zoom and on a 360px wide phone. We have not had an independent audit yet; when we do, we will publish what it finds here.
What we have built in
- Every control works with a keyboard, with one clear focus ring everywhere.
- Our date pickers, dropdowns and dialogs are labelled for screen readers and announce what changes.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, and form text is 16 pixels so phones do not zoom unexpectedly.
- Text and controls meet colour contrast guidelines, and colour is never the only signal: badges carry words and bars carry numbers.
- Animation is short and only on open, close and hover, and switches off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Images have text alternatives; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
- Emails come with a plain-text version.
What is not there yet
We would rather tell you than have you find out:
- The map on search results is harder to use with a screen reader. The same stays are always listed as text beside it.
- Walkthrough videos are made by hosts and may not have captions yet. The listing’s description and photos cover the same ground.
- The illustrated home map is visual; the room list and features beside it carry the same information as text.
Accessible stays
Hosts can list access features such as step-free entry, a roll-in shower or grab rails. We ask for a photo of each feature, so you can judge it for yourself, and a listing is only described as accessible when it meets the full set of features, not just one.
If you need something specific, message the host before you book. If a place was listed with a feature that was not there, that is covered by the GetawayShield™ guarantee as a place that is not as described.
